Se considera un nivel normal de glucosa en sangre en ayunas un valor igual o inferior a 126 mg\/dl, o igual o inferior 200 mg\/dl sin estar en ayunas. En caso de duda, se realiza la prueba de sobrecarga oral de glucosa (la curva de glucosa), que consiste en beber una soluci\u00f3n de glucosa para luego medir la capacidad del organismo de metabolizarla en un plazo de dos horas (nivel de glucosa en sangre). Si los niveles de az\u00facar en sangre son m\u00e1s altos de lo normal despu\u00e9s de dos horas, la diabetes queda confirmada y diagnosticada. Si el resultado es normal, se descarta la diabetes. Su m\u00e9dico tambi\u00e9n puede solicitar otro an\u00e1lisis de sangre: la prueba de hemoglobina A1c (HbA1c). Se trata de un marcador de los niveles de glucosa a largo plazo y un resultad igual o superior al 6,5% (48 mmol\/mol) es indicativo de diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Hay dos tipos de diabetes: la tipo 1 se caracteriza por la ausencia o escasez de insulina en el cuerpo y se manifiesta generalmente durante la infancia. Con la diabetes tipo 2, el cuerpo no produce suficiente insulina y se vuelve resistente a la acci\u00f3n de la insulina. Se presenta en pacientes adultos y mayores de edad.<\/p>\n<p>Nueve de cada diez pacientes con diabetes tienen la tipo 2, lo que acorta la vida en una media de diez a\u00f1os. Tambi\u00e9n reduce el n\u00famero de a\u00f1os vividos con buena salud, debido a enfermedades card\u00edacas o renales precoces. La diabetes tipo 2 es una enfermedad relacionada con el estilo de vida y est\u00e1 estrechamente vinculada a la falta de actividad f\u00edsica y a la obesidad, as\u00ed como a una alimentaci\u00f3n poco saludable.<\/p>\n<p>La diabetes tipo 2 se puede prevenir con un estilo de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthy-heart.org\/keep-your-heart-healthy\/physical-activity\/\">vida activo<\/a>, una <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthy-heart.org\/keep-your-heart-healthy\/heart-friendly-diet\/\">dieta equilibrada<\/a> y manteniendo un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthy-heart.org\/keep-your-heart-healthy\/keeping-a-healthy-weight\/\">peso saludable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Las personas con diabetes tienen un riesgo entre dos y cuatro veces mayor de desarrollar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthy-heart.org\/your-heart\/what-is-heart-disease\/\">enfermedades cardiacas<\/a> a lo largo de su vida.
